Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, is served by a two-court trial system—a Circuit Court and a District Court—both housed in the same judicial building in Greenville. Court records generated through these courts document everything from initial criminal filings and civil complaints through final judgments, orders, and post-conviction proceedings. These records are the official account of legal proceedings in the county and serve as a resource for parties to litigation, researchers, attorneys, and the general public.

Accessing Court Records in Kentucky

In Kentucky, court records are managed at the county level by the Office of Circuit Court Clerk. Records can be searched by visiting the clerk’s office in person, submitting a written or phone request, using public access terminals at the courthouse, or checking online through state-provided tools. KentuckyCourts.us may help users locate publicly available court case information and identify the correct clerk’s office for any Kentucky county. The Kentucky Court of Justice’s own KYeCourts guest login portal also allows public users to search active and recent case data online without a paid subscription.

How to Look Up a Court Case in Muhlenberg County?

Every request for court case records in Muhlenberg County begins with the Office of Circuit Court Clerk. Circuit Court Clerk Camron Laycock oversees records for the Circuit, Family, District, and Business courts operating in the county. The Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) does not hold case-level records and cannot fulfill requests—the clerk is the sole starting point.

Are Court Records Public in Muhlenberg County?

Court records in Muhlenberg County are presumptively public under the Kentucky Open Records Act (KRS 61.870–61.884). The Act requires that public agencies, including courts, make their records available for citizens to inspect and copy upon request. The burden of demonstrating that a record is exempt from disclosure falls on the agency withholding it, not the requester.

However, the Open Records Act identifies specific categories of records that are shielded from public disclosure under KRS 61.878, and additional protections arise from court rules and statutes governing particular case types. The following records are not publicly accessible in Muhlenberg County:

  • Juvenile records — Proceedings involving minors are confidential under Kentucky law
  • Sealed court records — Cases or documents sealed by court order are inaccessible without a court authorization
  • Expunged criminal records — Once expunged, records are removed from public view
  • Records of ongoing investigations — Documents that could compromise active law enforcement investigations
  • Adoption records — Sealed by statute to protect the identities of parties
  • Certain domestic violence and protective order records — May be restricted to protect victims
  • Personal identifying information — Social Security numbers, financial account data, and similar details are subject to redaction

When only a portion of a record is exempt, the clerk will redact the restricted content and release the remainder. If a request is denied, the agency must cite the specific statutory exemption justifying the denial.
